Intermediate Database Administrator
About the Job
As a member of the Production Database Team, this position is responsible for providing technical support for the production database environment. Production DBAs work closely with Engineering, Quality Assurance, Network Administration and Infrastructure groups to ensure connectivity, uptime and appropriate resource availability, and will monitor, correct and improve the function of the companys database servers and software. It is extremely important to the company that online transaction processing database systems offer the highest reliability and performance possible.
Key Responsibilities
The qualified candidate must be able to perform the following functions:
- Responsible for the installation, administration and configuring of SQL Server 2005/2008 databases on Windows 2003/2008 Enterprise servers in a high availability, multiple database and server environment.
- Handle all maintenance and administrative functions for assigned databases, including space management, backup/recoveries, index monitoring, and database growth.
- Requires the ability to work well with application developers in resolving performance issues.
- Interface with centralized security administration group; ensure that database security is effectively managed.
- Coordinate research, planning and implementation of Microsoft patches and fixes.
- Responsible for successful implementation of scheduled change orders, ad-hoc requests, and monthly maintenance windows.
- Facilitate root cause analysis on problems where appropriate, and identify action items/recommendations to address issues.
- Maintain documentation and coding standards, best practices, and quality improvement documentation.
- Responsible for 24X7 production support on a callout rotation basis for all SQL databases and database solutions.
- Resolve problem tickets.
Education and/or Experience
- 1-2 years IT operations experience with strong understanding of database structures, theories, principles, and practices.
- 2-3 years Microsoft SQL Server experience, including working knowledge of DTS and SSIS.
- Understanding of, and experience with, server-client computing and relational database environments.
- Experience working in a production iSCSI SAN environment containing high transaction volumes and large databases desired.
- Experience with clustered environments a plus.
- Outstanding interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
- Able to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
- Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
